The Christmas Tree's Origion by Mark Shrigley
Christmas trees and ornaments, as we know them today, appeared around the 1400's in Germany. As legend has it, a monk named Saint Boniface brought a Fir tree to celebrate the trinity - God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. This made sense since the tree was triangular, therefore, giving it a symbolic meaning. It caught on in Germany, and by 1510, in the city of Latvia, a fir tree was decorated with roses to celebrate the virgin Mary. So, whatever the rumors were concerning the tree itself was first established by the pagans themselves, may or may not be true.
A hundred years later, a small town in France named Strasbourg made great strides in this to be "Christmas" movement. The tree was actually brought indoors and the French put fruits, eggshells, and cookies on them. The French stepped it up again by putting tinsel on the tree - which was made with actual silver. Thus, the decorations on trees were now in full swing.
Christmas seemed to take a break in the 1700's until Queen Victoria got the ball rolling again in the 1800's with her encouraging at least the English to take a fir tree inside and decorate it as well. The Americans soon saw this and thought it was a good idea and joined in the fun. This is where the Germans, French, English and Americans got creative and glass ornaments in houses were hanging from the trees, Most of these were made in Germany which were basically hand-cast lead but mostly hand blown glass decorations. By 1925, where Saint Boniface brought the fir tree to a small German town, Germany now dominated the market of glass decorations for Christmas trees. Not to be outdone, the Japanese entered the market by producing ornaments that were very colorful and had an oriental touch to them that brought carious Americans in buying them by the thousands. The German monopoly was now broken.
Christmas ornaments were being imported to the United States until World War II broke out, and then dozens of American companies sprung up and the Christmas bulb was accepted (even until now). In the 1970's, there was an outbreak of hanging just about anything on a Christmas tree and still is accepted that way today. From gingerbread men to glass figurines, Americans and most of the world love to be creative with their tree decorations.
In the 1990's, there was an influx of personalized ornaments one could put on the family Christmas tree, but it didn't stop at Christmas. Personalized Ornaments for such occasion as weddings, graduations, birthdays, and about any special holiday or event came out and caught on not only in the United States, but throughout the world. Still though, more ornaments were bought at Christmas time since people loved to stick to traditions. What is a tree without its ornaments?
Christmas. Santa Clause. Decorations on the tree. It's not just a child's holiday, but the world's holiday. What a beautiful season. No wonder Andy Williams sang, "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year". And truly it is.
