Cholesterol and your holiday dinner by Iram
For many people who sit down to consume a 3,000-calorie holiday dinner, the idea of cholesterol levels and heart health is perhaps the furthest thing from their minds.
But that should not be the case. What and how much we eat has a direct correlation on our long-term health.
There are many different aspects to consider when making the selection of what to eat, how to live and exactly which way to treat our bodies. The heart must always be at the center of those decisions.
The heart is the key organ in the circulatory system. Its main function is to propel blood throughout the body, without which you would die. It usually beats from 60 to 100 times per minute, but it can go much faster when necessary. It beats about 100,000 times a day, more than 30 million times per year and about 2.5 billion times in a 70-year lifetime.
Cholesterol is a fat that is naturally occurring and very important to the body. Cholesterol is used to make many of the hormones and cell membranes that we require. In fact, our bodies use cholesterol to aid in relieving inflammation throughout the body; it's the body's first line of defense. When cholesterol levels become too high, however, it can be damaging. Cholesterol can stick to artery walls and narrow them, and as such is a major cause of cardiovascular disease, which is the leading killer of men and women across all racial and ethnic groups.
Cardiovascular disease can exist in many forms: high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease or a stroke. According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular disease causes 12 million deaths in the world each year and is responsible for half of all deaths in the United States. Overall, it is the leading cause of death in adults and, therefore, it's important to be educated about the risks involved and the ways in which it can be treated.
There are many risk factors associated with heart disease: age, sex, family history, smoking, poor diet, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, stress, physical activity and poor hygiene.
There are many types of cholesterol. The most talked about are two types of cholesterol: HDL (good cholesterol) and LDL (bad cholesterol), which are combined to provide a total cholesterol level. Physicians generally recommend a level that is below 200.
A variety of factors including lifestyle and family medical history can impact one's cardiovascular health, and it is important to speak with a physician about particular risk factors and proactive steps that can be taken to improve heart health. For instance, 30 minutes of cardiovascular activity (walking, running, jumping, or swimming) just three times a week can be the answer to getting the heart into shape. Avoiding smoking is also crucial.
As stated above, a high-cholesterol diet is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease. There are also foods that are high in saturated fat and trans fat (such as those made with Crisco and corn oil), which can also raise the level of LDL (bad) cholesterol. They have an effect on the body similar to cholesterol. As individuals consume high cholesterol foods (fatty red meat, egg yolks, butter, cheese and whole milk, to name a few) they run the risk of clogging their arteries and restricting blood flow to the heart. Although foods that are high in fat are associated with heart disease, it is just part of the issue.
Many foods that we consider to be heart healthy are actually loaded with bad fats and can damage the body. Healthy eating is really the building block to a healthy heart. In order to eat healthy, it's vital to look at labels and know what you are consuming. Heart-healthy foods include fruits and vegetables, as well as high-fiber bran food (such as oatmeal and grains), fish and omega-3 fatty acids and anything in the nut family. These types of foods will enable individuals to lead a healthier and longer life.
