HALLOWEEN TRADITION

The origins of the Halloween holiday come from the pagan traditions of the ancient Celts, for which the approach of winter was associated with death, there was nothing but a border world of live and dead.

In the night everybody could fall prey to the demons and get captured by the shadows dead.

To avoid this, the Celts extinguished the light, dressed up in scary clothes and flirted with the spirits by portraying them and exposing them the feast.

Later, the Romans conquered these territories and gained access to this holiday by making it something of their own.

The Catholic Church tried to supplant pagan customs and declared November 1 All Saints' Day, but this only added to the attractiveness of the rituals.

In America, Halloween was brought by immigrants from Ireland, and here it was settled down to such an extent that many believe that America is the birthplace of the holiday.

Horrible holiday’s features were liked by the Americans: ghosts, witches, vampires, pumpkins with a candle inside, the evil spirits and gifts - became a favorite annual pastime.

HALLOWEEN TODAY

Today, a collection of amusing and fascinating traditions is all that is left from the ancient Celtic holiday. On the night of October 31, November 1, people dress in costumes of evil forces and organize parties and masquerades.

There are present all the characters, the main criterion is to scare the rest of the frightening participants. Witches, demons, murderers, vampires, ... - all sorts of horror stories and horror heroes come to life and roam the city streets.

The main symbol of Halloween is glowing pumpkin head. Pumpkin core is removed, cut out "fierce" eyes, mouth and nose, the candle is inserted into the mouth.

Pumpkin symbolizes both the end of the harvest, the evil spirit and fire. In addition to pumpkin lights, people armed with sparklers and fireworks.

People participate in various contests and games at their homes.

For example, they arrange "apple" contest: the apples are thrown into the water, then the player trying to pull the apple out with a help of their teeth! Their hands are behind the back, so they do not occasionally help his master.

Halloween has become a most vivid and joyful event of autumn. The festive mood started with cheerful orange pumpkins and other decorations.

HISTORY of PUMPKIN

"Pumpkin" tradition has counted the centuries and originated from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed as Jack-the miser. According to legend, Jack invited the Devil miser for an aperitif.

Jack, being greedy and stingy and did not want to pay for the drinks and asked the devil to become a coin. But the devil is granted his wish, Jack decided to hide a coin and put it in his pocket with a silver cross, which was not to give the devil take the original shape.

In the end, Jack nevertheless freed the devil, taking him vow not to touch Jack's for a year, and after his death did not claim his soul.

During this year the second time Jack outwitted the devil, causing him to climb to a tree for fruit and drew a cross on the trunk. So Jack was able to negotiate with the devil for another 10 years of quiet life.

When Jack died, God, of course, refused to accept such a sinner to heaven. The Devil also had to fulfill his promise and did not take Jack into hell.

Jack was sent to the hopeless night with only a burning charcoal to light the path.

Jack put the ember in an empty turnip and started wandering. The Irish had called him «Jack of the Lantern», or simply "Jack O'Lantern."

In Ireland and Scotland, people began tinker their own versions of wandering lights, carving scary faces in turnips or potatoes and placing them on window sills or at the door, in order to scare away Jack and other evil miser.

In England, for making faces big beets were used. Emigrants from Great Britain brought the tradition to America, where it appeared a modern version of "Jack O'Lantern" - a lantern from a pumpkin - a popular vegetable in these places.

LESSONS of CARVING the PUMPKIN

"Carving a pumpkin" is one of the most popular Halloween’s lessons. When the October come the pumpkin can be found everywhere – near the doors and at dinner tables. Here are some Halloween ideas for Kids that can ease the cutting of your Jack of the Lantern:

• Choose only fresh pumpkins that have thin skin;

• pick the fruit without damage and rotted areas in order the pumpkin pleased the eyes longer;

Put a fraction of humor in celebration of Halloween. Arrange in your house "spider attack," for these purposes, you can use tennis balls: paint them with black felt-tip pen, glue thick woolen yarn as legs and hang from the ceiling of spiders with adhesive paper.

You can use a thin elastic band then the spiders will still bounce. To arrange a little surprise to your friends, hang a spider in the doorway at eyes level.

You can decorate a dining table. Black tablecloth and napkins create a mystical aura, orange candles, and small decorative pumpkins will give a festive mood.

JEWELLERY

Traditional holiday colors are black (the embodiment of dark forces) and orange (symbol of harvest). Halloween is difficult to imagine without a cut pumpkin with a candle inside.
